Movie Review – Curtain (2015)

March 7, 2016 by Amie Cranswick

Curtain, 2015.

Directed by Jaron Henrie-McCrea.
Starring Danni Smith, Tim Lueke, Martin Monahan and Rick Zahn.

SYNOPSIS:

An ex-nurse moves into a new apartment but when her shower curtains keep disappearing, she discovers a portal to another dimension in her bathroom.

Yes, this film is as bat-shit crazy as the synopsis would suggest.

Curtain (also named The Gateway) will remind you of a weird eighties horror film that you’d only ever see at 1am on some obscure TV channel. Some people would revel in finding this kind of movie and immediately get the popcorn whereas others, the majority in fact, would quickly change the channel. Unfortunately Curtain, is definitely something you should skip over.

Danni, our aforementioned ex-nurse moves into a new apartment and whilst sprucing it up, hangs a shiny new shower curtain in the bathroom. The next morning the curtain is no longer there. After several more shower curtains disappear, Danni films her bathroom and sees her curtain sucked into the bathroom wall. Danni confides in her whale loving friend Tim and they embark on a mission to find out where the shower curtains are going. They encounter some questionable characters along the way including a team of weird forest dwelling hicks led by a lumberjack man with backwards eyes and also some crazy demons. Wouldn’t be a low-budget horror movie without some crazy demons and a few hicks after all.

This sounds like a comedy horror right? Well it’s not. It’s a dead serious horror movie, dead being the operative word. Curtain really lacks any atmosphere. It has tried to be a clever, enigmatic piece of work but actually, every scene raises many questions, which are only matched by its lack of answers; even by end of the film you still won’t be any the wiser. But if you do punish yourself in starting this film, please continue until the end. What the end implies might be the most ridiculous thing ever implied in a film. That in itself, is entertainment.

Some might describe Curtain as quirky or eccentric. You’ll be able to appreciate that this was in fact what they were going for. This certainly wasn’t a lazy attempt at film making by director Jaron Henrie-McCrea, but it was not a successful one. Either avoid entirely or commit to losing 74 minutes of your life just for the super-odd ending alone.
