Music was instrumental to Joaquin Phoenix while filming Joker

September 26, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Joaquin Phoenix, the star of Joker, says that music behind-the-scenes was incredibly helpful when making the film.

Music, we all know, is a big part of a successful movie – a bad score or soundtrack can really detract from a film’s success. But what about music played behind-the-scenes to help with shooting?

In a recent interview with ComicBook.com, Phoenix said that music was integral to the Joker‘s movie-making process: “I think a lot of filmmakers have used music on set that I’ve worked with and it can be a really effective tool and I certainly use it myself. But for this film it was absolutely instrumental and again, that kind of dancing in the bathroom scene was the first time I heard the score and it had a huge, noticeable influence on the way that we ultimately discovered the movement for that scene, so it was absolutely integral to the character.”

Fans will be able to hear that score for themselves when Joker arrives next month. Fingers crossed the music proves to be a memorable component of the film.

Joker centres around the iconic arch nemesis and is an original, standalone story not seen before on the big screen. The exploration of Arthur Fleck (Joaquin Phoenix), a man disregarded by society, is not only a gritty character study but also a broader cautionary tale.

Joker is set for release on October 4th 2019 and stars Joaquin Phoenix (The Sisters Brothers), Robert De Niro (Goodfellas), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Bill Camp (Red Sparrow), Frances Conroy (American Horror Story), Brett Cullen (Narcos), Glenn Fleshler (Billions), Douglas Hodge (Penny Dreadful), Marc Maron (GLOW), Josh Pais (Motherless Brooklyn), Shea Whigham (Kong: Skull Island), Douglas Hodge (Robin Hood) and Dante Pereira-Olson (You Were Never Really Here).
