Netflix renews The Crown for sixth and final season

July 9, 2020 by Ricky Church

When The Crown began airing on Netflix, series creator Peter Morgan said his intention was to produce six seasons that would follow Queen Elizabeth II and the Royal Family through the many decades of her rule. It was a surprise when Netflix announced a few months ago the series would instead end with the fifth season, but now the streamer has reversed its course and gone back to the original plan as they have now renewed The Crown for a sixth and final season.

“As we started to discuss the storylines for Series 5, it soon became clear that in order to do justice to the richness and complexity of the story we should go back to the original plan and do six seasons,” said Morgan. “To be clear, Series 6 will not bring us any closer to present-day — it will simply enable us to cover the same period in greater detail.” The sixth season will bring the series into the early 2000s.

The fifth season will begin production next year with Imelda Staunton (Harry Potter) taking over as Queen Elizabeth and Lesley Manville (Phantom Thread) as Princess Margaret. The fourth season, which will premiere on Netflix later this year, will see Gillian Anderson (The X-Files) join the series as Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher and Emma Corrin (Pennyworth) as Princess Diana.
