Nicolas Cage says Ringu and Malignant have inspired his take on Dracula for Renfield movie

January 4, 2022 by EJ Moreno

Nicolas Cage playing Dracula sounds like a fever dream, but it’s a reality we will soon be seeing, and no one seems more excited about Universal’s upcoming Renfield film than Cage himself, who is gleefully talking about his turn as the iconic vampire.

Opening up to Variety, Cage offered some interesting titbits on what inspired his upcoming turn. He looked towards his uncle, Francis Ford Coppola, and his iconic film Bram Stoker’s Dracula, as well as the classics.

“I looked at Bela Lugosi’s performance, and then I looked at Frank Langella’s performance,” Cage said. “I looked at [Gary Oldman’s] performance in uncle’s movie, which I think it’s just so sumptuous. Every frame is a work of art.”

Cage took some fascinating inspirations from iconic horror films in modern pop culture: “I want it to pop in a unique way from how we’ve seen it played. So I’m thinking to really focus on the movement of the character. You know, I saw Malignant, and I thought what she did with those moves — and even Ringu with Sadako … I want to look at what we can explore with this movement and voice.”

Renfield is an upcoming Universal monster movie. Nicholas Hoult will star as the titular character, joined by Cage as Dracula, as well as Ben Schwartz and Awkwafina. The Tomorrow War’s Chris McKay will helm the project.
