Nicolas Cage was originally cast as Doctor Doom in 2005’s Fantastic Four

October 15, 2020 by Samuel Brace

According to a filmmaker with knowledge of the production, Nicolas Cage was originally cast as Doctor Doom in the 2005 Fantastic Four movie.

While many are familiar with Nicolas Cage’s brush with playing Superman, the world might be surprised to hear that Cage was originally cast as Doctor Doom before being replaced by Julian McMahon in the 2005 version of Fantastic Four.

This revelation comes courtesy of Ryan Unicomb, the filmmaker behind the upcoming Justice League: Mortal documentary. Unicomb has been able to get his hands on some makeup work and concept art for Cage in the role and posted to Instagram:

“Back before Julian McMahon took over the role, Nicolas Cage had been cast as DOCTOR DOOM for 2005’s FANTASTIC 4. The production team decided to approach Cage after a concept artist used the likeness of singer Marilyn Manson for some of their pieces. At the time, the project was considerably darker & Doom’s look was definitely walking a line between PG13 & R (as seen in these production maquette’s of his skinless, bio-metal arms). This obviously never panned out but it’s interesting nonetheless.”

You can see the concept art in the post above. It’s a pretty intriguing idea and would certainly have brought a different dimension to the film. Would you have liked to see Cage’s take on Doctor Doom? Let us know on our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
