Pablo Larraín is set to continue his trend for biopics depicting some of history’s most iconic women with the news that he is set to direct Angelina Jolie in a film about legendary soprano Maria Callas.
Following his Oscar bothering one-two of Jackie and Spencer, Deadline report that the Chilean filmmaker will direct Maria, a film about the life of American-born Greek soprano Maria Callas, and that Angelina Jolie will hope to follow in the Academy-Award nominated footsteps of Natalie Portman and Kristen Stewart by taking on the title role of Larraín’s latest biopic.
Written by Peaky Blinders creator and Spencer scribe Steven Knight, Maria will be based on true accounts will tell the tumultuous, beautiful and tragic story of the world’s greatest opera singer, relived and re-imagined during her final days in 1970s Paris.
In a statement Larraín said “Having the chance to combine my two most deep and personal passions, cinema and opera, has been a long-awaited dream. To do this with Angelina, a supremely brave and curious artist, is a fascinating opportunity. A true gift.”
Jolie, who won Best Supporting Actress in 2000 for her performance in Girl, Interrupted added “I take very seriously the responsibility to Maria’s life and legacy. I will give all I can to meet the challenge. Pablo Larraín is a director I have long admired. To be allowed the chance to tell more of Maria’s story with him, and with a script by Steven Knight, is a dream.”
