Patty Jenkins gives an update on Star Wars: Rogue Squadron

July 5, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Coming off her polarizing film Wonder Woman 1984, Patty Jenkins is getting ready to craft a new entry into the world of Star Wars. Jenkins’ Star Wars: Rogue Squadron will mark the next official Star Wars feature film, and the filmmaker is seemingly having the time of her life.

In a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Patty Jenkins expressed joy when discussing the film’s development to date:

“It’s going amazing. I had been on it already for six months before I even announced that, so we’re pretty deep into it,” says Jenkins. “We’re finishing a script, crewing up, and it’s all going wonderful. I’m so excited about the story and excited that we’re the next chapter of Star Wars, which is such a responsibility and such an opportunity to really start some new things. It’s really exciting in that way.”

We know other directors have encountered issues with Disney and Lucasfilm interfering in the filmmaking process – see Solo and Rogue One – but it seems like Jenkins isn’t facing those same issues at the moment. She also says developing Star Wars: Rogue Squadron is much different than her previous projects.

“It’s an entirely different way of working. I’m on the phone with all of them and doing Zoom meetings with everybody involved in Star Wars all the time.” She continues, “I’m fairly free to do the story that we want to do, but you really need to know who’s done what, who’s doing what, where it goes and how it works, and what designs have been done before. It’s a whole other way of working that I’m getting up to speed on.”
