Jumping Jellyfish! Who saw this one coming? 15-years after Steven Spielberg’s The Adventures of Tintin was released, Peter Jackson has revealed that his next film will be the long-planned sequel.
Jackson, who has spent the last few years making critically-acclaimed documentaries They Shall Not Grow Old and Get Back, was receiving the 2026 Honorary Grand Prize at the Sitges Film Festival in Catalonia when he gave fans an update on his producer-duties in Middle-earth, as-well-as revealing that Tintin would be his next film behind the camera.
“We have The Shadow of the Past, which is in the scriptwriting stage. The Hunt for Gollum is almost finished filming. I think there are about two weeks of shooting left. And we’ve also already written the script for Tintin 2, the second Tintin film. That will be the next film I make.”
Titled The Secret of the Unicorn outside of the United States, which is where the movie made most of its money, $296 million internationally against $77 million domestic, The Adventures of Tintin was developed with Jackson producing the first and Spielberg directing, and then the two Academy Award winners would perform a role-reversal for the sequel, intended to adapt The Seven Crystal Balls and Prisoners of the Sun, but for whatever reason that never happened. Meanwhile, there was also briefly talk of a live-action French movie adaptation of the 1963 Tintin album The Castafiore Emerald back in 2020, although that appeared to be short-lived.
Based on the comic book series by Hergé, The Adventures of Tintin was written by Steven Moffat (Doctor Who), Joe Cornish (Attack the Block) and Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead), and told the story of the titular investigative reporter (Jamie Bell) and his dog Snowy, who join forces with Captain Haddock (Andy Serkis) to search for the treasure of the Unicorn. The mo-capped adventure also starred Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Daniel Craig, Toby Jones, Mackenzie Crook, and Cary Elwes.
