Jamie Dornan to play Aragorn as The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum drops teaser

April 15, 2026 by EJ Moreno

With the return of The Lord of the Rings to the cinema, it needs to feel like a big deal to get the fanbase to the heights it reached with The Return of the King. If this year’s CinemaCon presentation is any indication, it seems like Warner Bros. is not playing around when it comes to The Hunt for Gollum.

One of the biggest new stories coming out of the event was Jamie Dornan taking on the role of Strider, the chief of the Northern Dúnedain Rangers, and, to fans, known as Aragorn. This comes after Andy Serkis confirmed a recasting of the part previously played by Viggo Mortensen was happening.

The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum will see Serkis directing the film and reprising the role of Gollum. He was best known for the role in Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings trilogy and his appearance in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Alongside Dornan will be fellow franchise newcomer Leo Woodall, starring as Halvard, another of the Dúnedain. It’s noted that Halvard joins Strider on the titular hunt. Kate Winslet is also set to be a new addition to the franchise in the role of Marigol. Returning Middle-earth veterans include Lee Pace, reprising the role of Thranduil; Ian McKellen, back as Gandalf; and Elijah Wood, returning to the role of Frodo. There are no other casting confirmations at the time of writing.

“Across two trilogies, a mark of a Middle-earth film has always been the formidable array of talent brought to bear in every role. The Hunt for Gollum continues in that tradition, and I am delighted to announce the return of two of Middle-earth’s most beloved performers, alongside some exceptionally talented new additions to Tolkien’s world,” said Serkis in a statement.
