Physical editions of Rendering Ranger: R² [Rewind] coming to Playstation, Switch and PC

February 7, 2025 by Andrew Newton

Rendering Ranger: R² was first released by Virgin Interactive Entertainment on the Super Famicom in Japan, since then it has become a rare and highly sought after game for many collectors. That rarity will never change but gamers who can’t afford the crazy prices will still be able to enjoy adding a physical edition of  Ziggurat’s Rendering Ranger: R² [Rewind] when it releases on PC, PlayStation 4|5 and Nintendo Switch on 20th March.

When Rendering Ranger: R² first released it wowed gamers with its distinctive visual aesthetic (unlike Rainbow Arts’ other title, Graffiti Man).  Its pre-rendered graphics, demanding gameplay and game design pushed the capabilities of the Famicom to its limits. The game became a hit and is now one of the most expensive SNES games out there.

Rendering Ranger: R² [Rewind] puts players in the role of ‘Double R’, a special forces operative tasked with defending the Earth from a catastrophic alien invasion. Players will fight their way through nine side-scrolling platform shooter levels as well as fast-paced horizontal shooter stages. There’s a wealth of aliens to destroy, including gigantic bosses (converted from pre-rendered 3D models) and some serious upgradable weaponry to kill them with.

Ziggurat’s updated version features the unreleased PAL version Targa as well as the Japan-only Rendering Ranger: R², the ability to save and rewind the game, and an optional CRT filter.

The Standard physical edition of the game will feature the game disc/cartridge, a manual and a controller diagram card in an attractive case, with the PC version being in a PC Micro Box with a USB stick with DRM-free build of the game.  An Armageddon Edition will also be available at a much higher price and include a Collector’s Edition box, the game, a reversible 12″x16″ poster, a Ranger enamel pin badge, a commemorative metal coin and a 3D printed metal helmet keyring.

These physical editions can be pre-ordered between 14th February to 16th March. The game will launch digitally on 20th March.
