R.I.P. James Caan (1940 – 2022)

July 7, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Some sad news to report this evening as it has been announced that legendary Hollywood actor James Caan passed away on Wednesday, July 6th, aged 82.

Born in New York City in 1940, Caan’s career spanned seven decades, and saw him nominated for four Golden Globes, an Emmy Award and an Academy Award.

After several stage and minor film and TV appearances in the early 1960s, Caan’s career began to take off during the decade with roles in the likes of Lady in a Cage (1964), Howard Hawks’ Red Line 7000 (1965) and El Dorado (1967), Robert Altman’s Countdown (1968) and Francis Ford Coppola’s The Rain People.

After an Emmy-nominated turn in the 1971 TV movie Brian’s Song, Caan reunited with Francis Ford Coppola for his most iconic performance, that of tough guy mobster Sonny Corleone, in The Godfather. Caan – who was originally cast as Michael Corleone before campaigning for Al Pacino in the role – was nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar alongside co-stars Pacino and Robert Duvall, although the trio lost out to Joel Grey for Cabaret.

Along with a cameo in 1974’s The Godfather Part II, Caan went on to appear in the likes of The Gambler (1974), Rollerball (1975) and A Bridge Too Far (1977) and Thief (1981), as well as making his directorial debut in 1978 with Hide in Plain Sight.

Following a battle with depression, substances and burnout in the 1980s, Caan returned to acting with roles in Alien Nation (1988), Dick Tracy (1990) and Misery (1990), and would continue to work frequently throughout the next three decades, with highlights including Bottle Rocket (1996), Dogville (2002), and Elf (2003) and Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (2009).

Caan was last seen on screen in the 2021 romantic comedy Queen Bees, where he starred alongside Ellen Burstyn, Ann-Margaret, Christopher Lloyd and Loretta Devine.
