Emmy Award-winning American actor Rip Torn has passed away aged 88, his representatives have announced.

Born in Temple, Texas in 1931, Torn moved to Hollywood in the 1950s, making his feature film debut in 1956’s Baby Doll before studying at the prestigious Actors Studio in New York and earning a Tony Award nomination for his Broadway role in Sweet Birth of Youth.

Torn would go on to amass over 2000 film and TV credits, appearing in the likes of The Cincinnati Kid, Maidstone, Payday, The Man Who Fell to Earth, The Beastmaster and Cross Creek, which saw him receiving an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
