Rian Johnson reveals Joseph Gordon-Levitt cameo in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, not thinking about directing Episode IX

September 11, 2017 by Gary Collinson

During an appearance in Japan to promote the upcoming release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, director Rian Johnson has revealed that he’s finished work on the hotly-anticipated middle chapter of the Sequel Trilogy, as well as revealing a (no longer) surprise cameo in the film.

“You know, what I can tell you is that my very good friend, the actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt, who was in a movie I did called Looper, he does a cameo as a voice of an alien in the film,” said Johnson. “It’s a very brief, little thing but it’s fun, and if you watch the movie maybe you’ll be able to hear and pick out Joe’s voice in the movie.”

Along with Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ J.J. Abrams, Johnson has been rumoured as a potential candidate to direct Star Wars: Episode IX following the departure of Colin Trevorrow, but he went on to play down that speculation, stating that he’s solely focussed on The Last Jedi.

“It was never in the plan for me to direct Episode IX, so I don’t know what’s going to happen with it, and I’m not sure what’s going to happen. But for me, I was entirely focussed on Episode VIII and having this experience, and now I’m just thinking about putting the movie out there, so I’m not really thinking about that. Whoever does it, I’m going to be really excited to be an audience member again and to sit down and see what the next filmmaker has to show us and where this story ends up going.”

So, not an outright denial there, and given that Lucasfilm has seemingly had a much smoother ride with The Last Jedi as it did with The Force Awakens, Rogue One and the upcoming Han Solo movie, one would have to assume that discussions will be taking place with Johnson, if they haven’t already.

In Lucasfilm’s Star Wars: The Last Jedi, the Skywalker saga continues as the heroes of The Force Awakens join the galactic legends in an epic adventure that unlocks age-old mysteries of the Force and shocking revelations of the past.
