Robert Pattinson confirmed as the next Batman by Matt Reeves

June 2, 2019 by Ricky Church

Last week it was announced Warner Bros. and director Matt Reeves had settled on two choices for the next Batman: actors Robert Pattinson (High Life) and Nicholas Hoult (Tolkien), and now it seems that the studio has officially selected Pattinson to don the cape and cowl for 2021’s The Batman.

The move comes after WB and Reeves had screen tests for both Pattinson and Hoult earlier this week. Pattinson was reportedly Reeves’ top choice so it’s not much of a surprise he was ultimately chosen as the Dark Knight. According to Deadline, part of the negotiations will be options on at least two more films from Reeves in a new Batman trilogy. It’s more of a formality though as it’s pretty much a lock that Pattinson will star in The Batman, which will apparently be unconnected to Ben Affleck’s portrayal in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Justice League.

UPDATE: Judging by the tweet from director Matt Reeves, we can safely assume it’s now a 100% done deal.

Pattinson is primarily known for his lead role in the Twilight franchise as well as portraying the doomed Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, but since the conclusion of the Twilight saga he has branched out to more dramatic and arthouse films such as Maps to the Stars and more recently High Life. Coincidentally, he now shares a Batman connection with The Dark Knight Trilogy director Christopher Nolan, who he’ll work with on Nolan’s next film Tenet.

Hoult, meanwhile, will next be seen reprising his role of Hank McCoy/Beast in X-Men: Dark Phoenix, which opens next week.
