Rumour: Ben Affleck signs up for Batman trilogy, leading to Batman Beyond

July 31, 2017 by Gary Collinson

On the eve of the San Diego Comic-Con, a report emerged claiming that Ben Affleck’s future as Batman was in doubt – something that the actor vehemently denied during the DCEU panel at Comic-Con last weekend.

It seemed a lot of the original report was based on director Matt Reeves’ comments that he had plans for a Batman trilogy, something which would likely take Affleck well into his 50s were it to come together.

Well, if (and there’s a definite emphasis on ‘if’ here) a report from Fortress of Solitude is to be believed, Affleck has now officially signed on to star in three Batman movies from Reeves, leading to a Batman Beyond feature film.

“Affleck is staying on as the Batman,” claims the site’s source. “There were contract issues, but everything’s sorted now. He’ll do Reeves’ trilogy which sets up Batman Beyond, which will be the next phase of the DC film universe.”

It’s hard not to be sceptical with this rumour, as had Affleck actually closed a deal to headline a Batman trilogy, it would surely be huge news, and all over the trades. Terry McGinnis fans probably want to take it with a healthy pinch of salt. That being said, moving Affleck’s Bruce Wayne into a Batman Beyond-style mentor role would certainly seem the logical way to take his character at some point over the next few years.
