Rumour: Ben Affleck “wants out” of The Batman and the DC Extended Universe

February 14, 2017 by Robert Kojder

The potential bad news just keep on coming for Warner Bros. and DC Films, as there are new rumours swirling around that Ben Affleck wants out of The Batman and all future roles as The Caped Crusader.

This comes from John Campea of the Collider Movie Talk show, who does admit that he has been wrong in the past, and says: “I’ve talked to three separate people, both in one way or another connected in some way to what’s going on at Warner Bros. What all three have told me was that — nothing about whether the script was thrown out or whether they liked the script, nothing about the direction Matt Reeves is taking it, none of that — but one of the things that has come out of the conversation with all three is this. They’re telling me that Ben Affleck, make no mistake, he does want out. He doesn’t want to to be Batman anymore, is what I was told.”

This report comes just a few short weeks after Ben Affleck stepped down from the director’s chair of The Batman, and follows an earlier rumour that he was looking to walk away from the DCEU entirely. However, even if it is true that Affleck “wants out”, it doesn’t necessarily mean that he’s willing to walk away from the role, as presumably he’ll be locked into a contract for the solo movie, as well as future instalments such as the already announced Justice League sequel.

Ben Affleck will return as Batman for Justice League, which is set to open on November 17th, while the current plan for The Batman is to begin shooting this year ahead of a release in 2018, although again rumours have suggested this could be pushed back a year.
