The Russos team with World War Z writer for ISIS thriller Mosul

November 3, 2018 by Gary Collinson

While they’ve been hard at work on Avengers: Infinity War and the upcoming Avengers 4, filmmakers Joe and Anthony Russo have also found time to produce a Middle East-set thriller entitled Mosul, which was shot in secret earlier this year.

Mosul marks the directorial debut of World War Z screenwriter Matthew Michael Carnahan, and is based on articles from Luke Mogelson of The New Yorker, who spent time embedded in an elite police unit made up almost entirely of native sons of Mosul, Iraq’s second largest city, who fought to liberate the city from ISIS militants in 2014.

“Our writer-director Matthew Michael Carnahan was the perfect artist to depict this uniquely regional story, which champions a culture that has never really been championed on screen before,” said the Russos. “The heart of the movie depicts the innate desire to fight for country and home.”

Mosul was shot in secret in Morocco in the spring and is currently in post-production.
