Sam Raimi in talks to direct Marvel’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

February 6, 2020 by Gary Collinson

Having brought Spider-Man to life with his trilogy back in the 2000s, it seems that director Sam Raimi could be set for a return to the superhero genre with Variety reporting that the Evil Dead helmer is in talks with Marvel Studios to direct next year’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

Original Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson was originally on board for the Sorcerer Supreme’s second solo outing but exited the sequel last month due to creative differences with Marvel. The studio is however intent on sticking to its planned May production start date and has made securing Derrickson’s replacement as a top priority.

Raimi hasn’t directed a feature since Disney’s 2013 Wizard of Oz prequel Oz the Great and Powerful, and should he sign on to Doctor Strange 2, it will mark a change in strategy for Marvel Studios, which has spent much of the past decade enlisting up-and-coming talent with little-to-no experience working on blockbusters as opposed to established filmmakers.
