Scream 7 to see creative reboot, Spyglass wants Neve Campbell and Patrick Dempsey returns

November 23, 2023 by EJ Moreno

The Scream franchise has seen its most shocking week since the passing of Wes Craven.

With the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes ending, many were excited to see development begin on Scream VII. Then, this week saw the firing of Melissa Barrera, as well as Jenna Ortega leaving the franchise.

Alongside a new director in Christopher Landon, the landscape of the franchise is much different now with its two former stars gone. But Variety notes that the studio and filmmakers behind the seventh Scream are working out the kinks.

In a new report from the industry trade, “James Vanderbilt and Guy Busick, the writers of the previous two Scream installments, will now work on a fresh draft to present to filmmakers.”

The new draft will look to re-do the story again; Scream already saw a reboot a few years back with the fifth entry that saw Radio Silence taking over from the late Wes Craven.

One of the most significant changes the writers, filmmakers, and studios want is the return of Neve Campbell. During the development of this year’s Scream VI, Campbell turned down the offer made by Spyglass and walked away from the slasher franchise she made famous.

However, Campbell won’t be alone, as Variety also notes they want the return of Patrick Dempsey (last seen in Scream 3 and mentioned in the last two installments). With Dempsey being named Sexiest Man Alive by People and his return turn in Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving, the actor would likely be a big grab for Scream VII.

It is to be noted that “none of these actors have been in active negotiations thus far.” Spyglass has yet to confirm the news as well.
