SDCC: Rihanna to take a shower in Bates Motel as Marion Crane, series ending after season 5

July 23, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Sad news for fans of A&E’s acclaimed Psycho prequel series, as the network announced during its panel at the San Diego Comic-Con yesterday that Bates Motel will be closing its doors following the upcoming fifth season.

Meanwhile, the panel also brought the news that Freddie Highmore (Norman Bates) and Vera Farmiga (Norma Bates) are to be joined in the cast by pop star Rihanna, who will step into the shower in the role of Marion Crane, played by Janet Leigh in Alfred Hitchcock’s 1960 classic.

“We wanted to thrust the iconic role into a contemporary spotlight and redefine it in a meaningful and exciting new way,” said executive producers Carlton Cuse and Kerry Ehrin. “We also heard Rihanna was a fan of the show, and we were huge fans of hers, so it was the perfect collision of creativity and fate.”

Season five of Bates Motel will air on A&E in 2017.
