Searching sequel in development at Sony and Stage 6

August 15, 2019 by Liam Waddington

Sony Pictures’ Stage 6 Films is working on a sequel to the 2018 surprise hit, Searching, according to Deadline. The thriller focuses on a father (John Cho) desperately searching for his missing 16 year old daughter Margot (Michelle La) aided by a police detective played by Debra Messing. The film turned out to be a breakout hit and a financial success for Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions, who bought the world rights deal for $5 million before it grossed $75 million worldwide.

Directed by Aneesh Chaganty and co-wrote by Sev Ohanian, Searching made use of computer screens, e-mail exchanges, phone screens, Skype calls, Facebook messages, and more to turn the film into an original whodunnit and bring the investigation to life by revealing dark secrets throughout. However, the film seems to be shifting to an anthology as Chaganty has confirmed the sequel will feature a new cast and plot in a “tech-driven thriller”.

It’s true. But note: the story will not follow the same characters or plot line as the first. Most importantly, we see this as an opportunity to tell another original, tech-driven thriller. If we can do that AND help bring new faces/voices to the industry, bonus points 🙂 https://t.co/eg9AnfpD9V

Chaganty is currently working on a new thriller titled Run, that follows a wheelchair-bound, home-schooled teenager who begins to suspect her mother is keeping sinister secrets from her. The film stars Sarah Paulson (American Horror Story), Kiera Allen, and Pat Healy, and is set for release on 24th January 2020.
