Shawn Levy’s Star Wars movie has found its writer

July 12, 2024 by Ricky Church

With Shawn Levy getting ready to take the summer blockbuster season by storm with the much anticipated Deadpool & Wolverine, he is already looking ahead to one of his next gigs as he joins the galaxy far, far away for his mysterious Star Wars film. Per The Hollywood Reporter, Levy has now hired a writer for the film as he prepares for that production once his latest Marvel film is out.

Author and screenwriter Jonathan Tropper will write Levy’s Star Wars film. The two have had a long working relationship with Tropper writing The Adam Project and This Is Where I Leave You, the latter of which he adapted from his own novel. He is also known for creating and showrunning Banshee and Warrior and writing for Steven Knight’s See as well as his other novels How to Talk to a Widower and One Last Thing Before I Go.

Levy has been attached to direct a new Star Wars film since late 2022, but it is unknown if this might be another standalone film or the next Episode of the franchise. Star Wars has been absent on the big screen since 2019’s Rise of Skywalker, though it has dominated plenty of Disney+ with The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, the final season of The Clone Wars and currently The Acolyte among a few others.

Though we haven’t had any official news on Star Wars in a while, there are several films Lucasfilm are attempting to develop. The first is The Mandalorian & Grogu, a feature film spin-off of The Mandalorian that will be directed by Jon Favreau for a May 22nd, 2026 release with filming expected to begin this year. Daisy Ridley will also reprise her role as Rey for a film directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, but it still is unknown if Rey’s film will serve as Episode X and launch a new trilogy or if it will be standalone. Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny director James Mangold is also attached to develop a Star Wars: Dawn of the Jedi film while Patty Jenkins has inked a new deal to direct Rogue Squadron years after plans for the film were reportedly scrapped.
