Shazam! Fury of the Gods director on Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman cameo

March 27, 2023 by Gary Collinson

Although the WB and DC marketing team decided to spoil it in a TV spot in the week leading up to release in what ultimately proved to be a failed attempt to spark some interest in the film, Shazam! Fury of the Gods featured a surprise appearance from a member of the Justice League, and  – unlike the first film’s Superman “cameo” – this time they actually brought the real actor too.

Speaking to THR in the wake of the DC sequel’s box office disappointment, director David F. Sandberg opened up about Gal Gadot’s Wonder Woman cameo – as well as dismissing any rumours about deepfake technology being used on a stand-in by sharing a video of him directing the Amazon Princess’ scene remotely.

“[Wonder Woman] was always supposed to be in [Shazam! Fury of the Gods], but I didn’t believe it was going to happen because of what happened on the first movie where we had to do a headless Superman cameo,” said Sandberg. “I thought that was going to happen here, too. But then it actually did happen, which was great, because then we could poke fun at the headless cameo of the first movie, with the Wizard [Djimon Hounsou] dream sequence. But we never could have done that if we didn’t actually have Gal at the end because people would’ve been furious.”

Is it possible that this cameo appearance will mark Gal Gadot’s DC swansong, similar to Henry Cavill’s brief Superman return for Black Adam? Warner Bros. and DC Studios already pulled the plug on Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman 3, and while James Gunn has publicly dismissed talk that Gadot has been ousted from the role, we are yet to hear how the Amazon Princess will factor into the revamped DC Universe.

Both Superman and Batman are being recast for Superman: Legacy and The Brave and the Bold, so it would be a little strange if Gunn and Peter Safran opted to keep one third of the DCEU’s Trinity in place. However, as we know, the likes of Viola Davis’ Amanda Waller and John Cena’s Peacemaker are sticking around, so at this point, who knows?
