Shōgun season 2 details reveal returning cast members, time jump and production start

April 30, 2025 by Ricky Church

The second season of FX’s hit series Shōgun has revealed several details about its upcoming production. Cosmo Jarvis will returning alongside series lead Hiroyuki Sanada where he will reprise his role as John Blackthorne as production readies to begin in January 2026.

Season two will be based on an original story after the first was adapted from James Clavell’s best-selling 1975 novel. Clavell’s series does not follow any of the characters introduced in Shōgun, forcing series creators Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks to utilize characters and and stories they adapted out of the first season for the second as they created a new story.

The upcoming season will also see a large time jump, taking place a decade after the conclusion of the first season. Shōgun season two “continues the historically-inspired saga of these two men from different worlds whose fates are inextricably entwined.” Production will take place in Vancouver once again come the new year.

Shōgun is coming off an extremely successful first season and won several accolades at various awards ceremonies, breaking the record for number of Emmy Awards won for a show in a single season with 18 wins that included Outstanding Drama Series, Sanada winning Lead Actor in a Drama Series and Anna Sawai for Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

Sanada also served as a producer on season one, but will now take on an executive producer role with Jarvis becoming a co-executive producer for season two.

“When a mysterious European ship is found marooned in a nearby fishing village, its English pilot, John Blackthorne (Jarvis), comes bearing secrets that could help Toranaga tip the scales of power and devastate the formidable influence of Blackthorne’s own enemies — the Jesuit priests and Portuguese merchants. Toranaga’s and Blackthorne’s fates become inextricably tied to their translator, Toda Mariko (Anna Sawai), a mysterious Christian noblewoman and the last of a disgraced line. While serving her lord amidst this fraught political landscape, Mariko must reconcile her newfound companionship with Blackthorne, her commitment to the faith that saved her and her duty to her late father.”

Shōgun features Hiroyuki Sanada, Cosmo Jarvis, Anna Sawai, Tadanobu Asano, Hiroto Kanai, Takehiro Hira and Moeka Hoshi.
