Speedball remake coming to Steam and consoles this month

January 7, 2026 by Andrew Newton

To the roar of crowds and shouts of ice cream, developer and publisher Rebellion has announced that Speedball will launch on Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5 on 27 January. The game will also leave Steam Early Access on the same date. Speedball is a revival of the classic series made by the Bitmap Brothers back in 1988, which to this day, is one of the best futuristic sports games.

In the far future of 2138, Speedball is a violent, no-holds-barred sport used by the mega-corporations to distract the downtrodden populace from the misery of living in this miserable future (not too different to the Running Man universe). In this sport, two teams of cybernetically enhanced players go head-to-head in an attempt to score more goals, while also causing as many injuries to the opposition as possible. Each match is fast-paced and unpredictable, and players will need to master their passing and shooting skills.

Speedball will feature:

  • Fast-paced and brutal matches.
  • A wide range of teams and arenas, with arena-specific obstacles and abilities.
  • A slow-motion ‘Slam Cam’ captures the most brutal tackles.
  • Arcade-style matches combine with sports management.
  • Create a team that matches your playstyle, using players’ individual traits and talents.
  • Play against AI, then compete online or against friends.

When the game leaves Steam Early Access, there will be several new features, including:

  • A League Mode with 10 teams competing over a season.
  • A Tutorial system to help new managers.
  • Brutal versions of arenas alongside the standard ones.
  • Improved visuals, shooting system and enhanced gameplay mechanics.
  • Eight new arenas, along with dynamic traps and obstacles.
  • New armour sets and colour styles.

Look out for Speedball arriving on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and leaving Steam Early Access on 27th January.
