Steven Spielberg to direct Michelle Williams in a movie loosely based on his childhood

March 10, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Steven Spielberg is a director intrinsically linked with nostalgia and childhood, and anyone who watched HBO’s 2017 documentary will know that his cinematic oeuvre has been informed by his own upbringing.

Well now he appears to be interested in making things slightly more autobiographical with the news that Michelle Williams is in talks to play a role loosely based on his mother in a forthcoming Amblin Partners film.

While Spielberg’s latest, an adaptation of West Side Story, sits on a crowded shelf awaiting a post-pandemic release this Christmas, it seems that the great director has been mulling over his next project, which Deadline reports will be his first attempt at writing a script since 2001’s A.I. Artificial Intelligence.

Michelle Williams has been linked to a role inspired by his mother, with Spielberg set to begin casting for boys of various ages who will portray a child based on the director at different stages during his time growing up in Arizona.

Are you excited at the prospect of seeing Spielberg’s life through a lens, or would you rather he got back to big-budget spectacle? Let us know what you think by heading to our social channels @FlickeringMyth…
