Sydney Sweeney sees Madame Web as a building block for her career

March 18, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Sydney Sweeney knows how to play the Hollywood game and looks at every hit or dud as a way to further herself.

Sweeney is currently promoting her horror film Immaculate; check out our review here. During a recent interview for the project, she dishes about all things Madame Web.

From filming to the critical/commercial response, Sweeney tells GQ UK that she viewed the entire experience as a building block and something to help her throughout her career.

The actress discloses, “It’s what allowed me to build a relationship with Sony. Without doing Madame Web, I wouldn’t have a relationship with the decision-makers over there.” She adds, “Everything in my career I do not just for that story, but strategic business decisions. Because I did that, I was able to sell Anyone But You. I was able to get Barbarella.”

As for another round as Julia Carpenter in a Spider-Woman movie, Sweeney keeps it diplomatic, “I think that if the story is right and you have the right team, I would love to.”

Madame Web has an 11% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $90 million worldwide. The film is now available digitally. Read our written review here, and watch our video review below…

“Meanwhile, in another universe…” In a switch from the typical genre, Madame Web tells the standalone origin story of one of Marvel publishing’s most enigmatic heroines. The suspense-driven thriller stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, a paramedic in Manhattan who may have clairvoyant abilities. Forced to confront revelations about her past, she forges a relationship with three young women destined for powerful futures…if they can all survive a deadly present.

Directed by S.J. Clarkson (The Defenders), Madame Web stars Dakota Johnson as Cassandra Webb, Sydney Sweeney as Julia Carpenter, Isabela Merced as Anya Corazon, Celeste O’Connor as Mattie Franklin, and Tahar Rahim as Ezekiel Sims.
