Syfy cancels George R.R. Martin’s Nightflyers after one season

February 20, 2019 by Ricky Church

Just a couple of months after its television premiere, Deadline reports SyFy has decided not to renew the George R.R. Martin adaptation Nightflyers for a second season. While the series premiered in December, the cancellation comes just a few weeks after it was made available on Netflix worldwide.

While Nightflyers was envisioned as an ongoing series, SyFy decided it would be best to leave it as a limited series instead. One factor which led to the decision was the series’ ratings, which were not too high when it premiered on television. The first season is still available to watch on Netflix.

This isn’t the only series of Martin’s work that has ended this year as Game of Thrones‘ final season will begin airing in April. Fans of Martin’s have more to look forward to, though, as Hulu is developing two Wild Cards series while HBO is working on a Game of Thrones prequel The Long Night.

The series starred Gretchen Mol (Boardwalk Empire), Eoin Macken (The Night Shift), David Ajala (Fast & Furious 6), Sam Strike (EastEnders), Maya Eshet (Teen Wolf), Angus Sampson (Fargo), Jodie Turner-Smith (The Last Ship) and Brían F. O’Byrne (Million Dollar Baby).

Nightflyers follows eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath who embark on an expedition to the edge of our solar system aboard The Nightflyer – a ship with a small tight knit crew and a reclusive captain — in the hope of making contact with alien life. But when terrifying and violent events begin to take place they start to question each other — and surviving the journey proves harder than anyone thought.
