The Angry Birds Movie becomes the second biggest video game film of all-time

Following on from the good news of Warcraft passing $250 million worldwide, fellow video game adaptation The Angry Birds Movie has some good news of its own.

Having been in cinemas for nearly a month, The Angry Birds Movie has hit $312 million worldwide – making it the second biggest video game movie of all-time. It’s competition for the number one spot is Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time which earned $330 million in 2010, and The Angry Bird Movie could easily gather another $18 million from international screenings to surpass it.

Domestically, The Angry Birds Movie is also second behind 2001’s Lara Croft: Tomb Raider‘s $131 million. It’s highly unlikely The Angry Birds Movie will catch up with it, but it can sit pretty in the fact it has vastly out-performed Duncan Jones’ Warcraft and last year’s Hitman: Agent 47, which managed only $22 million overall.

The movie takes us to an island populated entirely by happy, flightless birds – or almost entirely. In this paradise, Red (Jason Sudeikis, We’re the Millers, Horrible Bosses), a bird with a temper problem, speedy Chuck (Josh Gad in his first animated role since Frozen), and the volatile Bomb (Danny McBride, This is the End, Eastbound and Down) have always been outsiders. But when the island is visited by mysterious green piggies, it’s up to these unlikely outcasts to figure out what the pigs are up to. 

The Angry Birds Movie is set for release on May 13th 2016 in the UK and May 20th 2016 in the States with a voice cast that includes Jason Sudeikis (We Are The Millers), Josh Gad (Frozen), Danny McBride (This is the End), Maya Rudolph (Grown Ups 2), Bill Hader (Trainwreck), Kate McKinnon (Ghostbusters), Tony Hale (Arrested Development) and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones).
