The Best TV Characters of 2018

December 29, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Kim Wexler – Better Call Saul

It takes quite a character to fight for the spotlight with Jimmy McGill (and nearly win) but this is just what Better Call Saul’s Kim Wexler is able to achieve. Each season Kim (Rhea Seehorn) becomes a more complex and rich creation, her relationship with Jimmy is one of the most fascinating and moving anywhere in entertainment and her ability to surprise the audience is only matched by that of her partner in crime. Kim is her own worst enemy but someone we beg to root for, and for that, she’s perhaps the most relatable character on BCS. Tragedy awaits her no doubt but what a ride it’s been thus far.

Jimmy McGill – Better Call Saul

Played with devastating brilliance by Bob Odenkirk, Jimmy McGill of Better Call Saul has done the unthinkable, becoming as nuanced and infuriating as his future client Walter White, becoming that same train wreck you just can’t look away from. We want the best for Jimmy but he makes it bloody difficult, and in 2018, he took his biggest step yet into the life that will destroy all that was ever good about him. Jimmy is written to perfection, his choices never predictable, except in the way that they turn the audience against him, but thanks to his personal charisma and association with Kim, he never quite loses us. The man now known as Saul Goodman is a titan of the small screen and the next chapter in his story can’t come soon enough.

Honourable mentions

Francis Crozier (Jared Harris) – The Terror, Nell Crain (Victoria Pedretti) – The Haunting of Hill House, Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks) – Better Call Saul, Lalo (Tony Dalton) – Better Call Saul, Karen Page (Deborah Ann Woll) – Daredevil, Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) – Daredevil, Dr. Azumi Fujita (Sonoya Mizuno) – Maniac, David Haller (Dan Stevens) – Legion, BoJack Horseman (Will Arnett) – BoJack Horseman, John Dutton (Kevin Costner) – Yellowstone, Martin Byrde (Jason Bateman) – Ozark, Ruth Langmore (Julia Garner) – Ozark, The Kid (Bill Skarsgård) – Castle Rock, Akecheta (Zahn McClarnon) – Westworld.
