The Dark Knight screenwriter says even Warner Bros. “didn’t get” Heath Ledger’s casting as The Joker

August 6, 2018 by Gary Collinson

It’s hard to imagine now given how iconic his performance was, but the news that Heath Ledger has been cast as The Joker in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight was met with the same kind of backlash and outcry usually reserved for the unveiling of a new Batman actor.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Nolan’s brother and The Dark Knight trilogy co-writer Jonathan Nolan has revealed that he shared the fans’ confusion over the casting – as did Warner Bros., who “didn’t get it”.

“When I wrote The Dark Knight, Chris had to figure out how we’d tackle the Joker,” said Nolan. “Chris had a good meeting with Heath Ledger. And no one got it — I didn’t get it, the studio didn’t get it. And the fan community was… we were fucking pilloried for it. ‘Disaster, worst casting decision ever!’ Chris just stuck to his guns. It was a question of not giving the fans what they’re asking for but what they want — which is, ‘Let’s find a really fuckin’ serious actor, somebody who’s going to come in and just tear this role to pieces.'”

Of course, Ledger went on to surprise everyone – except Christopher Nolan, it seems – with his performance as the Clown Prince of Crime, a role which saw him deservedly honoured with a posthumous Oscar for Best Supporting Actor.
