The LEGO Movie Sequel hires Bojack Horseman creator for script rewrite

July 8, 2016 by Justin Cook

Creatively speaking, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller have done most of the heavy lifting in the LEGO cinematic universe, from directing and writing the film that jumpstarted the whole franchise, The LEGO Movie, to signing on to produce every future LEGO-related spinoff and sequel. According to a new report from Variety, however, the duo will be leaving their script for The LEGO Movie Sequel in the hands of Bojack Horseman creator Raphael Bob-Waksberg, as he has been enlisted to rewrite the original draft.

Due to Lord and Miller being so busy with other projects, including 2018’s Han Solo Star Wars Anthology movie, which they are helming, Warner Bros. decided that it would be best to get a “fresh take” on their LEGO script. Bob-Waksberg, while not the hire anybody was expecting, is responsible for Bojack Horseman, a show that many have hailed as one of the funniest and most inventive comedies of the past few years, so that should earn him at least a bit of credibility.

Not to mention, Bojack, while mostly comprised of hilarious puns, sight gags and raunchy humor, has quite a bit of heart and emotional resonance, something The LEGO Movie wasn’t exactly lacking either. The sequel will be Bob-Waksberg’s first writing job on a major motion picture.

Rob Schrab (Monster House) is attached to direct the film, which recently had its release date pushed back from May 18th, 2018 to February 8th, 2019. In addition to Lord and Miller, Roy Lee and Dan Lin are set to produce the project. Lastly, the third season of Bojack Horseman will premiere on Netflix on July 22nd.
