The Princess Diaries 3 is in the works at Disney

November 16, 2022 by Matt Rodgers

Never ones to pass up the opportunity to mine their own IP, it is being reported that Disney are working on a direct follow-up to The Princess Diaries, and while Anne Hathaway hasn’t officially been crowned the film’s star, the Academy-Award winner has been vocal about getting the gown back on for a while now.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Reacher and Quantum Leap scribe Aadrita Mukerji is writing the script, which sources say is a continuation of the Anne Hathaway-led films rather than a reboot.

Hathaway has spoken previously about how keen she is to get a threequel off the ground, and has doubled down during press-duties for her starring role in James Gray’s Armageddon Time (read our ★ ★ ★ review here) by telling Entertainment Tonight that she’s “pulling for it” to happen. Hathaway added “If there’s any way to get Julie Andrews involved, I think we would make it work. We would go to where she was and put a green screen behind her and just make it happen.”

Directed by the late Garry Marshall, The Princess Diaries saw Hathaway making her feature film debut as shy American teenager Mia Thermopolis, who discovers she is the heir to the throne of the small European country of Genovia, ruled by her estranged grandmother Queen Clarisse Renaldi (Andrews). Released in 2001 the film grossed $165 million at the worldwide box-office, with a 2004 follow-up The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement taking in $134 million.
