The Super Mario Galaxy Movie tops the box office with $372.5 million worldwide

April 6, 2026 by Gary Collinson

Its Mario Party time for Universal Pictures, Illumination Entertainment and Nintendo, with their animated sequel The Super Mario Galaxy Movie amassing a bumper $372.5 million at the global box office as it rolled out in cinemas across the world this past weekend.

The sequel to 2023’s blockbuster video game adaptation The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Galaxy delivered the biggest worldwide opening of the year so far, grossing $190 million domestically over its five-day opening from Wednesday (with $130.9 million from Friday through Sunday), and the fifth biggest global opening of all time for an animated movie behind Zootopia 2 ($560.3 million), Ne Zha 2 ($431.3 million), Moana 2 ($389.3 million) and its predecessor ($375.6 million).

With this opening, Mario becomes the first animated franchise to have two instalments debut to more than $350 million at the box office. The first film amassed a whopping $1.36 billion worldwide during its run, making it the highest-grossing video game adaptation of all time, and with such a strong start it wouldn’t be a surprise to see The Super Mario Galaxy Movie go on to challenge A Minecraft Movie ($961.2 million) for second place in that list.
