The Week in Star Wars – Rumoured Episode VIII titles, more Blu-ray details, Luke Skywalker’s sexuality and more

March 6, 2016 by Luke Owen

Pre-order Star Wars: The Force Awakens via Amazon UK or Amazon US

In this edition of The Week in Star Wars, we’ve got some rumoured titles of Star Wars: Episode VIII, details of the Blu-Ray (Blu-Rey) release, some original trilogy news and more…

With Star Wars: Episode VIII now in production, it’s high time we had some rumours of what the film’s title could be. We had two rumours this week in fact, with one Redditor posting the very dubious title of Star Wars: Tale From the Jedi Temple while a Croatian newspaper suggested it is Star Wars: The Order of the Dark Side. The first one is particularly hilarious when you see the image they provided as their “evidence”, and the second one really has no basis for their claim. In fact, it’s probable that Disney and Lucasfilm have not even chosen a title yet, so this is something that could get old pretty quickly…

…As you would expect, this was our top story on the audio version of The Week in Star Wars on the Flickering Myth Podcast, which you can listen to below…

…Sticking with Episode VIII briefly and its star Daisy Ridley has been talking about the production so far, where she’s been filming with Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker. “We have been rehearsing a lot and it’s really amazing,” she told MTV. “When we went back to Skellig to do the opening of VIII, it was so crazy doing the same scene with a different crew of people. [Hamill is] amazing to rehearse with, and I’m very excited to be doing the rest of the stuff. It’s such a good story, seriously. Luke is so cool in this one. Really!”…

…Speaking of Mark Hamill, and the actor has been speaking about his experiences working with Harrison Ford on the set of Star Wars back in ’77, including thinking he was his sidekick and not the hero. “Clearly, he was this leading man, and I was this annoying kid,” he joked. “And in that seven pages, I thought, well when he drops me off that’s the last time you’ll see me in the movie.” It’s a really great interview and you should definitely check it out…

…Hamill has also been talking about the sexuality of Luke Skywalker following J.J. Abrams’ comments on gay characters appearing in Star Wars down the line. “In the old days you would get fan mail,” he said. “But now fans are writing and ask all these questions, ‘I’m bullied in school … I’m afraid to come out.’ They say to me, ‘Could Luke be gay?’ I’d say it is meant to be interpreted by the viewer. If you think Luke is gay, of course he is. You should not be ashamed of it. Judge Luke by his character, not by who he loves…”

…And lastly on the original trilogy, and Peter Mayhew has been sharing images of the original Star Wars script via Twitter, and this week revealed that Han in fact did shoot Greedo first and not the other way around. Take that George Lucas…

…Looking back to Star Wars: The Force Awakens and it’s another round of Blu-Rey details (I will run that joke into the ground). First up is Target and Best Buy’s announcement of their exclusive covers which look very nice and then we have some details of the UK release of the movie (which arrives on April 18th). Finally our friends across the pond will be getting the movie slightly sooner when it arrives on April 5th. Interestingly enough, there are two conflicting reports on the special features for the movie. Both have the featurettes, the table read, the Force For Change videos and documentary, but the UK release seems to be the only one to feature deleted scenes. Interesting…

…Electronic Arts has announced its latest DLC expansion for Star Wars Battlefront, which takes us to the Outer Rim and adds the bounty hunter Greedo and Rebel pilot Nien Nunb as playable heroes, a new game mode entitled Extraction, and new locations on Sullust and Jabba’s throne room and sail barge on Tatooine. The Outer Rim expansion is set for release this month and will be available to season pass holders…

…Habsro has unveiled four new 3.75″ Star Wars Rebels action figures set for release this year in Sabine Wren, Kanan in Stormtrooper Disguise, The Seventh Sister and Darth Maul…

…Sticking with Star Wars Rebels, and here’s a clip from last week’s episode ‘Shroud of Darkness’, which sees Kanan returning to the Jedi Temple, and here’s the Rebels Recon feature for the episode. And if you’re excited for next week’s outing, here’s a clip from ‘The Forgotten Droid’…

…Before we have your comic book preview for the week, Entertainment Weekly announced that Han Solo is set to be the next character to receive his own limited series from Marvel Comics, with a five-issue miniseries from Marjorie Liu and Mark Brooks which will take place between the events of A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back.

…And lastly, Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Poe Dameron is set to headline his own series from Marvel Comics, and we’ve got a look at two variant covers for Star Wars: Poe Dameron #1 by Joe Quinones and David Nakayama, as well as a first look at the new villain. Not only that, but here’s the preview: Strap in and lock s-foils in attack position because one of the breakout stars of the Star Wars™: The Force Awakens is getting his very own ongoing series! Superstar creators Charles Soule (Lando, Obi-Wan and Anakin) and Phil Noto (Chewbacca) take you to a galaxy far, far away for the new adventures of Poe Dameron – former Republic flyer turned Resistance fighter and the best pilot in the galaxy! Set before the events of STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS, be there for Poe’s daring adventures as they take him to the edges of the galaxy and back. Hand-picked for the Resistance by legendary General Leia Organa, follow Poe, BB-8 and a squadron of X-Wing pilots on a top-secret mission that could hold the key to saving the galaxy. But with the full might of the First Order on their tail, will the operation be short lived?

That’s all for this week – may The Force be with you. And don’t forget to pre-order Star Wars: The Force Awakens via Amazon UK or Amazon US…
