Train to Busan sequel in development, director offers first plot details

South Korean filmmaker Yeon Sang-ho has announced that he is working on a sequel to the acclaimed 2016 zombie thriller Train to Busan, which is going by the working title Bando (English: Peninsula).

“It is an extension of Train to Busan, after the virus has spread throughout Korea, but the characters are not the same,” revealed the filmmaker. “It shares the same world view and is a zombie action film that deals with the aftermath on the peninsula of what happened in Train to Busan. I’m still writing the script, but the scale is rather large since there will be action with something to it.”

Yeon went on to say that he hopes to go into production on the sequel in 2019, but wouldn’t reveal whether he had any plans for an animated companion piece to the movie, similar to that of Seoul Station, which serves as a prequel to Train to Busan.

Produced on a budget of just $8.5 million, Train to Busan grossed $93.1 million worldwide upon release, and received near-universal positive reviews. An English-language remake was announced in 2016, although there has been no further news on that particular project since.
