Transformers Bumblebee spinoff to be “lower cost”, 2019 movie also standalone

February 17, 2016 by Gary Collinson

Last week it was announced that Paramount Pictures and Hasbro have set release dates for three Transformers movies in 2017, 2018 and 2019 respectively.

Initially, it was thought that the Michael Bay-directed Transformers 5 would be followed by Transformers 6 and Transformers 7, before it was clarified that the 2018 movie would actually be a spinoff centred on the Autobot Bumblebee.

Well, it seems the 2019 release will also be standalone, while Paramount chairman and CEO Brad Grey has told THR that the Bumblebee spinoff will be produced at a lower cost than the main series.

“There are characters in the Transformers universe that can be and should be made into their own movies. We will make the first movie with Michael and go right into a Bumblebee movie, which will be at a lower cost. We’ve brought in a pretty strong writing staff run by Akiva Goldsman, and they have put together eight or nine interesting stories. So, between that group and Steven Spielberg’s guidance on a story level, these characters are a big business for us to pursue.”

Paramount has previously announced an animated Transformers movie set on Cybertron, but it’s unclear whether that will occupy the 2019 slot or an additional date.
