Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. has snapped up the rights to the Cannonball Run franchise, tapping Tropic Thunder and Men in Black 3 screenwriter Etan Cohen to pen a new film, which is being described as a “relaunch” rather than a “remake”.
Revolving around a cross-country race, the first film was released by Fox in 1981 and was a huge hit at the box office, earning over $72 million from its $16 million budget. Warner Bros. released the 1984 sequel Cannonball Run II in 1984, while Orion released the third film Speed Zone (a.k.a. Cannonball Fever) in 1989.
