The Week in Spandex – Avengers: Infinity War and Black Panther start shooting, Groot solo movie “inevitable”, David Ayer on Suicide Squad criticism, DCEU rumours, Unbreakable 2 and more

January 28, 2017 by Gary Collinson

…Over at Netflix and this week has brought us some set photos from The Punisher featuring Jon Bernthal’s Frank Castle [see here], along with a couple of set photos from The Defenders which sees a reunion between Mike Colter’s Luke Cage and Krysten Ritter’s Jessica Jones [see here]. Meanwhile, we’ve also got a list of episode titles and directors for Iron Fist [see here], while Funko has unveiled its latest Pop! Vinyl figures for Daredevil and Jessica Jones [see here]…

…Avengers: Ultron Revolution returns to Disney XD today for the four-episode arc ‘Civil War’, and we’ve got a clip which sees the Avengers battling the mind-controlled Inhumans, Black Bolt and Medusa; watch it here…

…Bryan Singer is set for a return to the X-Men world, although not for another instalment in the movie franchise, but rather the pilot episode of Marvel and Fox’s new spinoff series from Matt Nix (Burn Notice). The potential series will centre on two ordinary parents who discover their children are mutants and are then forced to go on the run to protect them…

…Marvel has its first X-Men series Legion premiering on February 8th and FX has released a new promo for the series entitled ‘What Have You Been Told?’ [watch it here] along with a batch of promo images for the first episode [see here], while creator Noah Hawley has spoken about its place in the wider X-Men world: “I think it’s important for us to establish this as a fully realized world with fully realized characters. It does connect and it can connect, but I’m not relying on that. I have to prove myself. I have to prove that the show is good enough to incorporate those elements from the movie world, if that were ever possible. It’s sort of a non-starter to say James McAvoy’s going to be in my show. I’m not saying never, but certainly not in the first year of it. You’d have to pay those guys so much money to begin with. You’d have to pay them movie money in a different medium..”

…With the release of Logan drawing ever closer, 20th Century Fox has released a host of new images from the X-Men spinoff featuring Wolverine (Hugh Jackman), Professor X (Patrick Stewart), X-23 (Dafne Keen), Donald Pierce (Boyd Holbrook) and Xander Rice (Richard E. Grant) [see here and here], along with a brand new poster featuring a weary, battle-scarred Wolverine [see here] and a new TV spot [watch it here]…

…Logan director James Mangold has officially confirmed that the movie has received an R rating (and a 15 here in the UK) for “strong brutal violence and language throughout, and for brief nudity”, while he also discussed why Mister Sinister would not have been a suitable villain given the film’s tone: “I think [what] you get a better sense of is, that’s exactly the kind of thing this movie avoids. Meaning, the kind of operatic highly-costumed, stroboscopic villainy… that’s not in this movie. Everything is kind of as real as we can make it. The movie is trying to kind of take a step backward from that kind of spectacle, so that we get another kind of gain, you know. There’s that loss, but the gain is that the movie feels extremely real and is — as one person who saw the film said to me, ‘I feel like I could go down the street and run into that Wolverine.’ Meaning that this is in my world, not some shiny other world. This is actually taking place in my world..”

…Hugh Jackman also offered up some words on his (supposed) X-Men swansong, stating that: “I said this was my last one and they said make the movie you want to make. And so Jim Mangold and I had this blank canvas and we wanted to make something really different. Definitely tonally different, I kept thinking The Wrestler, Unforgiven. He was thinking Unforgiven as well and The Gauntlet and these other movies which just seemed to really match his character. Early on we had the idea for the title not having anything to do with Wolverine in it but just being about the man. And what the collateral damage of being Wolverine your entire life would be.” You can read the rest of Jackman’s comments about it being “a standalone” movie here…

…Moving on to the DC Extended Universe now and after weeks of rumours suggesting that various instalments of the DCEU are “a mess”, this week brought a positive rumour out of Sundance suggesting “good things” for Warner’s two 2017 releases, Wonder Woman and Justice League. That would normally be great news for DC fans, although unfortunately this one came by way of El Mayimbe; given his almost uncanny knack for being wrong, now is probably the time to start getting concerned…

…This week has brought us a new image from Justice League featuring Batman (Ben Affleck), The Flash (Ezra Miller), Cyborg (Ray Fisher) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot), while Zack Snyder also shared a behind-the-scenes shot of Gadot recording ADR [see here], as well as confirming that Superman will play a big part in the the DC team-up, despite being absent from the marketing material to date: “Superman does play a big part in this movie,” said Snyder. “His presence, and lack of presence, are big story points…”

…James Wan took to social media this week to share a cast photo from a table read for Aquaman featuring Jason Momoa (Aquaman), Amber Heard (Mera) and Patrick Wilson (Ocean Master) [see here], while makeup artist Mélanie Inglessis has shared a photo of her and Amber Heard prepping for the role of Mera, although it’s not quite clear whether this was for something Aquaman related, or for Justice League [see here]…

…Click below to continue on for The Flash, Shazam, Suicide Squad, Gotham City Sirens, Supergirl, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, Black Lightning, Gotham, Powerless, The LEGO Batman Movie, Justice League Dark, Unbreakable 2 and more…
