The Week in Spandex – Batman v Superman, DC TV, Captain America 3, Iron Man 4, The Hulk, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Daredevil, Spider-Man and more

September 13, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Our weekly round-up of all the latest superhero news and talking points, including Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Legion of Super-Heroes, Gotham, The Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, Teen Titans, Guardians of the Galaxy, Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man, Captain America 3, Iron Man 4, The Incredible Hulk, Black Panther, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Agent Carter, Daredevil, Big Hero 6, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, The Sinister Six, Venom Carnage, X-Men: Apocalypse and more…

After a selection of photos arrived online showing the new Batmobile on the Detroit set of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, director Zack Snyder took to Twitter to give us a high-resolution image of Ben Affleck’s ride from the 2016 DC superhero ensemble. Be sure to read the thoughts of our writing team on Dark Knight’s new wheels in the latest Flickering Myth Reaction, and check out Luke Owen’s feature where he looks at the Evolution of The Batmobile from its very first appearance in Batman #27 way back in 1939 through the 60s TV series to the films of Tim Burton, Joel Schumacher, Christopher Nolan and now Zack Snyder…

…Yesterday a wild – and false – rumour starting doing the rounds claiming that a Batmobile had been stolen from the set of Batman v Superman, and Zack Snyder has had some fun with the “report”, posting one of his Batman v Superman / Star Wars mash-up images showing Gotham Police arresting a Stormtrooper for the “crime”…

…In another Batman v Superman-related tidbit, Benedict Cumberbatch has responded to the incessent rumours linking him to the DC team-up: “I think Batman v Superman is going to happen. It’s a film that’s being made,” the Sherlock star joked when asked if the Batman v Superman rumours were true. I’m not at liberty to say whether I’m Batman or Superman…”

…From one rumour to another now and it has been reported by Latino-Review that Warner Bros. is quietly looking to kick off development on a Legion of Super-Heroes movie by seeking out potential screenwriters to pitch their take on the team of futuristic superheroes from the 30th and 31st centuries. Of course, with eight unannounced DC movies on Warner’s slate after Batman v Superman and Shazam, you could probably say the same thing about any number of DC properties at present…

…As Warner Bros. announces that Gotham and Constantine will be heading to next month’s New York Comic-Con, FOX has continued its build up to the premiere of the Batman prequel series on September 22nd with the release of a new banner for the upcoming show featuring the villains  Carmine Falcone (John Doman), Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova), Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith), Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) and Edward Nygma (Cory Michael Smith), along with a pair of character promos for Detectives James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue)…

…Next up after Gotham on the DC TV front is the Arrow spin-off The Flash, which is set to premiere on October 7th, and this week it has been revealed that the producers plan to introduce yet another DC character into the show in the electricity-wielding ‘Flashpoint’ villain Blackout, while Andrew Kreisberg and Greg Berlanti have stated their intention to introduce Wally West at some point in the future: “What’s very cool is in the New 52 they hadn’t reintroduced Wally [yet]. When they reintroduced Wally [in the New 52], they made him African-American. So now and forever, Kid Flash will be African-American,” said Kreisberg, with Berlanti adding that: “We made the West characters African-American so we can eventually head in that direction, absolutely… That’s our hope…”

…Arrow returns for its third season the day after The Flash’s premiere, and to whet our appetites, The CW has dropped a batch of images featuring Stephen Amell (Oliver Queen), Felicity Smoak (Emily Bett Rickards) and David Ramsey (John Diggle) alongside Superman Returns’ Brandon Routh, who is playing Ray Palmer, a.k.a. The Atom. Meanwhile, amid rumours that the roster of the Suicide Squad will be expanded in the new season, star Stephen Amell has spoken about The CW’s ever-expanding DC universe, stating that with Arrow and The Flash they are building a ‘Justice League on TV’, in addition to teasing the possible introduction of Green Lantern: “I don’t think there is a logistical reality to us participating in the feature side. That being said, I never wanted to have to feel like the show was justified, just because we participated in the movie. I don’t think my character would participate on the cinematic side. What’s that saying? Is it six seasons and a movie? Our show right now has me, Arsenal, Flash. There’s going to be Firestorm and Atom. The Justice League elements of it are very present on our shows already. We’ve referenced Ferris Air a lot. It would be really cool to have Green Lantern. Hopefully, that happens. I have no inside information. Unless I do…”

…Arrow fans might also be interested in our latest competition, where we have three DVD copies of The Complete Second Season up for grabs; enter here for the chance to get your hands on a copy…

…A week ago it was rumoured that Warner Bros. is working on a live-action TV series based upon Supergirl, Greg Berlanti has confirmed that development is underway on the potential show: “We’re just starting to work on it. We haven’t gone to the networks yet, so. I’ll be happy, very excited to talk about it once we know where its home will be and that kind of stuff, but not at this moment...”

…And that’s not all, as it has been announced this week that Dick Grayson’s Nightwing could be heading to the small screen as the leader of the Teen Titans, with TNT apparently gearing up for a pilot order for Titans from Akiva Goldsman (Batman Forever, Batman & Robin) and Marc Haimes (The Last Word), which will follow the first Robin “who emerges from the shadow of Batman to become Nightwing, the leader of a fearless band of new Super Heroes including Starfire, Raven and many others…”
