The Week in Spandex – Justice League, The Batman, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Avengers: Infinity War, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Black Panther, Deadpool 2

March 25, 2017 by Gary Collinson

In this edition of The Week in Spandex, we look at Justice League, Wonder Woman, The Batman, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Supergirl, The Flash, DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, Arrow, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Spider-Man: Homecoming, Black Cat and Silver Sable, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Thor: Ragnarok, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Inhumans, The Defenders, Iron Fist, Logan, Deadpool 2, Gifted, Legion, The Pro and more…

The wait for the new Justice League trailer is almost over! Warner Bros. announced this week that the trailer for the Zack Snyder-directed DC ensemble is set to arrive online today (Saturday), and to whet our appetites the studio unveiled a teaser poster [see here], along with individual character posters and teasers for Aquaman, Batman, The Flash, Wonder Woman and Cyborg, culiminating with another poster showing the League united [see here]. UPDATE: And here’s the trailer!…

…With all the Justice League excitement, it’s easy to forget that Warner Bros. has Wonder Woman set to open this June, and the film received its official classification from the MPAA this week, with the Gal Gadot-headlined solo movie rated PG-13 for “sequences of violence and action, and some suggestive content…”

…Given the delay to The Batman, J.K. Simmons has revealed that he’s unsure whether he’ll be reprising his Justice League role as Commissioner Gordon for the Dark Knight solo movie prior to Justice League 2: “My part in the first Justice League coming out this fall is very, very small… It’s a little introduction of the character. But whenever the next one gets off the ground, whether it’s The Batman movie or the Justice League sequel, and I know those things are getting shuffled around right now … we thought we might be getting to work pretty soon on The Batman, but we’ll see what the future brings. Hopefully that’ll be another comic-book character that I get to take two or three or four cracks at.” Spare a thought for Joe Manganiello though – unlike Simmons, he’s not even sure whether he’s still attached to The Batman given rumours of a page-one rewrite…

…While Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice split audiences, one person who is a fan of the movie is Goon: Last of the Enforcers director and star Jay Baruchel, who had some praise for director Zack Snyder this week: “I’ve watched it about seven times… even when I saw the theatrical one and didn’t love it. In its weakest moment, it has more choice, style and commitment to it than the best moment in Captain America: Civil War. I can’t tell you what it’s about or who made it. You watch Batman v Superman you know exactly what it’s about and [Zack Snyder] fucking committed to a choice and DC always does that…”

…There’s been a lot of fan support for Pacific Rim and The Lost City of Z star Charlie Hunnam in the role of Green Arrow in the DCEU, but Hunnam has shot down the possibility by revealing that he has no interest in superhero roles: “I didn’t grow up a comic book fan and I haven’t really seen any of those Marvel films or the Batman films. It’s just not really my taste. I must confess I don’t really know who the Green Arrow is. It’s not part of my vision for my career or what I aspire to…”

…Turning to the small screen now and you can read Martin Carr’s review of Monday’s sixteenth episode of Supergirl season two ‘Star-Crossed’ here, and check out trailer and batch of images for the Kevin Smith-directed ‘Distant Sun’ here and here. Meanwhile, in other Supergirl news, it has been announced that we’ll be seeing a lot more of Lena Luthor in season three, with actress Katie McGrath upgraded to a series regular…

…Supergirl also appeared in this week’s episode of The Flash, and you can find Jessie Robertson’s review of the musical crossover ‘Duet’ here. Meanwhile, we also have a trailer, promo and images for Tuesday’s eighteenth episode ‘Abra Kadabra’ [see here and here], while it also has been announced that Anne Dudek (House) has nabbed a recurring role as future genius Tracy Brand, and executive producer Andrew Kreisberg has confirmed that the fourth season won’t feature a speedster as the main antagonist…

…The Legion of Doom claimed the Spear of Destiny in this week’s episode of DC’s Legends of Tomorrow ‘Fellowship of the Spear’ [read Jessie’s review here] and are set to reshape reality in Tuesday’s penultimate season two episode ‘Doomworld’. The CW has released a trailer, promo and poster for the episode [see here and here], while Marc Guggenheim has also revealed that Arrow’s Felicity Smoak will be making a cameo appearance – complete with mask and costume! Take a look at concept art of Felicity suited up here…

…You can also read Jessie’s review of this week’s episode of Arrow ‘Kapiushan’ here (which executive producer Marc Guggenheim described as “one of the darkest episodes we’ve ever done”), while we also have a trailer, promo and images for this coming week’s ‘Disbanded’ [see here and here]…

…Marvel released a new extended TV spot for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 to announce that tickets are now on sale for the hotly-anticipated Marvel sequel [watch it here]. That wasn’t the only promotional material we got, as Marvel also released a poster for Kurt Russell’s Ego the Living Planet [see here] and character posters for Star-Lord (Chris Pratt), Groot (Vin Diesel), Rocket (Bradley Cooper), Gamora (Zoe Saldana), Drax (Dave Bautista), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Nebula (Karen Gillan) and Ayesha (Elizabeth Debicki) [see here], an IMAX poster [see here], a selection of new images [see here and here], an Empire magazine cover [see here], and some promotional images of Hot Toys’ upcoming range of collectible Bobble-heads [see here]…

…Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn has been chatting about Groot’s role in the sequel, stating that his popularity from the first movie has ensured that he’s “a better written character” in the sequel, while Chris Pratt also shared a very special message from Star-Lord bigging up the sequel as “the greatest movie in the history of movies…”

…Click below to continue on for Spider-Man: Homecoming, Black Cat and Silver Sable, Avengers: Infinity War, Black Panther, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Thor: Ragnarok, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., Inhumans, The Defenders, Iron Fist, Logan, Deadpool 2, Gifted, Legion, The Pro and more…
