Valek defeats Venice as The Nun II pips Poirot at the top of the box office

September 18, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

It was a spooky stand-off atop the North American box-office this weekend, with Disney’s murder-mystery threequel A Haunting in Venice taking on last weeks champ, The Nun II, and whilst it was almost too close to call between the two, The Conjuring‘s demonic nun managed to pip Kenneth Branagh’s Poirot by a mere $200K.

The Nun II suffered a softer than expected decline of 55% during its sophomore frame for a weekend take of $14.7 million. This took the Michael Chaves (The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) directed sequel to $56 million domestically and $102.3 million overseas.

Those domestic receipts saw it come in ahead of A Haunting in Venice, which arrived in theatres off the back of franchise best reviews (read our ★★★ take here) to earn $14.5 million for the 3-days. This was ahead of 2022’s pandemic-affected Death on the Nile, which landed with $12.8 million, but trailing 2017’s Murder on the Orient Express, which opened with $28.6 million. The third of Kenneth Branagh’s Agatha Christie adaptations took a further $22.7 million overseas for a global tally of $37.2 million.

Another sequel sat in third place in the shape of The Equalizer 3, with the Denzel Washington trilogy-capper taking $7.23 million, lifting its domestic tally to $73.68 million, and a worldwide cume which stands at $132.4 million.
