Vin Diesel to shoot Riddick: Furya in late summer

May 6, 2024 by Ricky Church

Vin Diesel will return to space this summer in a return to his other iconic role as Richard B. Riddick in Riddick: Furya, the next entry in the Riddick franchise.

Riddick: Furya will see Riddick “finally return to his homeworld, a place he barely remembers and one he fears might be left in ruins. But there he finds other Furyans fighting for their existence against a new monster. And some of these Furyans are more like Riddick than he could have ever imagined.”

The new film will be directed by David Twohy, the director of all the Riddick films to date, with Diesel producing. Production will begin the end of August and take place in the UK, Germany and Spain.

Diesel first starred as Riddick in the 2000 film Pitch Black, which saw Riddick as a captured convict and the only hope of his ship’s crew after they crashland on a planet with nocturnal creatures hunting them. In that first appearance, he was a human who got his eyes surgically altered in prison to see in the dark, making him the best option to hunt the nighttime monsters in turn.

Diesel returned as Riddick in 2004’s The Chronicles of Riddick and its anime tie-in Dark Fury, where his backstory was retconned. The new film revealed he was actually a Furyian, a warrior race that could see in the dark among other abilities. They were nearly wiped out after a prophecy stated a young Furyian would grow up to defeat a power hungry tyrant, sending him to kill the entire planet in order to forestall the prophecy. 2013’s Riddick brought the series back to its roots when he is marooned on a planet and hunted both by bounty hunters and the planet’s creatures.
