Who is the Anchor Being of the Marvel Cinematic Universe?

August 4, 2024 by EJ Moreno

Who is the Anchor Being of the MCU Sacred Timeline? Here’s EJ Moreno with six possible candidates…

Deadpool & Wolverine have broken records at the box office and are also breaking the minds of MCU fans worldwide.

In a non-spoiler explanation, the recent Marvel Studios production introduced the concept of an “Anchor Being,” a key figure in a particular Marvel universe. We saw a Wolverine being the centerpiece for one universe’s entire existence and the ramifications of what that does.

As we move forward, with Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars on their way, fans are beginning to wonder who will be the official Anchor Being in the Sacred Timeline. So many guesses have been thrown around online, from long threads on social media to hot debates on Reddit, and we’ve done our best to collect the best suggestions. So, let’s see who is the best pick for our MCU Anchor Being…

Honorable Mentions

Happy Hogan: How does Jon Favreau keep appearing in these movies? This is the only explanation.

Madisynn: Our queen deserves the universe, so we should let it literally revolve around her. Argue with a wall.

Kang:
Doing this could be a fun way to write off the actor; killing his character would send us in disarray…even more.

Spider-Man

Our Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man completely threw the MCU for a loop in Spider-Man: No Way Home, but one thing came off during that film. Peter Parker is crucial to this whole timeline.

Some could argue that the character’s ownership by Sony could interfere with this, but the relationship between the two studios seems more important than ever now. You can’t imagine the future of the MCU without this character, making him a literal anchor for many viewers.

While not an ageless being, it seems like Spider-Man’s death (the effects of which we saw in Endgame) would throw everything into madness.

Scarlet Witch

As one of the Marvel characters with a “death” in a film, it could be a terrific concept that someone who is no longer in the MCU is the reason for all the multiverse madness occurring. Wanda fans would love this as her legacy.

The Sacred Timeline needed Wanda, no matter how dark her path took her. It also felt like her death came under unusual circumstances, similar to how Logan’s in Deadpool and Wolverine was rare. With all that, her being one of the more important beings makes sense.

A resurrection could be in order, and no Marvel comic fan would turn the idea of seeing her face off with RDJ as Doctor Doom.

Captain America

Here we go with another character who is no longer part of the current Sacred Timeline, passing away with Avengers: Endgame, and we could see the First Avenger as the reason 616 is melting slowly.

Much like the aforementioned Wolverine death, a satisfying conclusion for a character doesn’t mean it benefits the rest of the world. Steve Rodgers getting his moment with Peggy and a happy death might’ve helped him, but he could’ve taken himself off the map at a needed time.

We also know Chris Evans is still down to play in the MCU, given his recent cameo, so another moment to close off his story could work now.

Doctor Strange

Back to another living character in the MCU, we have Doctor Strange, a character that’s slowly become such a key figure in what makes this timeline work (both inside and outside the films).

The theory of Doctor Strange as the Anchor Being for the Sacred Timeline also gained some weight when a recent clip of Kevin Feige calling the actor an “anchor” to the MCU surfaced. Could the master of the modern Marvel movie be planting the seeds in unexpected spots?

Some fans may also question Strange being snapped as a reason he can’t be, but a snap and a death may mean different things here.

Bruce Banner/Hulk

What better way to offset Hulk’s lack of a movie than making him a key to the whole thing? Not only does this feel right, but it also makes a lot of sense based on what little we know of Anchor Beings.

So, with Wolverine aging at a delayed speed, the same could be said about the Hulk, which has seen its version nearly become immortal. The Hulk will be around the MCU for quite some time, but what happens when a new foe with an old familiar face comes to take out the big man?

The moment of a villain with Stark’s face taking down a former friend could be the Earth-shattered Avengers: Doomsday needs.

Iron Man

The MCU has gone to hell since Tony Stark died, both within the canon and in reality. If Iron Man’s dramatic sacrifice in Avengers: Endgame shifted things, the iconic RDJ being an Anchor Being makes sense.

Things also get a bit more interesting when you add that Robert Downey Jr. is back at Marvel Studios, but this time, he’s Victor Von Doom. As one door closes, a new one opens, and it could lead to some very wild moments, even a Stark vs. Doom moment, to delight Downey’s ego.

There are endless possibilities for who could be the Sacred Timeline’s Anchor Being, but making the iconic Tony Stark that key figure only supports so much lore.
