Jason Momoa is quite the busy man in the world of DC. The actor is still awaiting the release of his Aquaman sequel and may have found a way to survive the James Gunn DCU reboot.
For months now, there’s been speculation that the former DCEU actors won’t be returning for Gunn’s rebooted universe, which was recently confirmed by Variety. One of the more interesting tidbits is that Jason Momoa has actively campaigned to stay on Team DC, even if it means playing another character.
Per the report from Variety, Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom will mark Momoa’s last appearance as the classic DC hero, but he’ll soon return as the sometimes villainous Lobo.
Yes, Momoa will trade in the water for a motorbike in space, and his appearance as Lobo could happen as soon as James Gunn’s 2025 film Superman: Legacy.
For many, this news won’t be a shock as Momoa has been pulling hard for this new role, even posting on social media about it.
“Four years ago, I was screaming, wasn’t I?” Momoa shared in a video earlier this year. “Four years again. It’s a mystery, baby. I got some really good news, great news with Warner Bros. Wish I could tell you!”
For those who don’t know, Lobo is an intergalactic bounty hunter with a foul mouth; Roger Slifer and Keith Giffen created the antihero, and he first appeared in Omega Men #3 in 1983.
While he’s appeared in a few DC projects before, this would be the live-action feature film debut of Lobo, giving both the character and Momoa a fresh new role. With no standalone Lobo movie being announced as part of Gunn and Safran’s new DC slate, the perfect place for a soft launch for the character would be Gunn’s Superman: Legacy. Even if it’s a post-credit stinger, it would give the film even more buzz.
Before Momoa’s space days, he’ll need to complete his time at sea; Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is set for release this December after years of reshoots and delays.

All returning to the roles they originated, Jason Momoa plays Arthur Curry/Aquaman, now balancing his duties as both the King of Atlantis and a new father; Patrick Wilson is Orm, Aquaman’s half-brother and his nemesis, who must now step into a new role as his brother’s reluctant ally; Amber Heard is Mera, Atlantis’ Queen and mother of the heir to the throne; Yahya Abdul-Mateen II is Black Manta, committed more than ever to avenge his father’s death by destroying Aquaman, his family and Atlantis; and Nicole Kidman as Atlanna, a fierce leader and mother with the heart of a warrior. Also reprising their roles are Dolph Lundgren as King Nereus and Randall Park as Dr. Stephen Shin.
Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom arrives in cinemas on December 20th.
