Wonder Woman becomes highest-grossing superhero origin film domestically

August 23, 2017 by Samuel Brace

Wonder Woman has now become the highest grossing superhero origin movie ever in the U.S.

The Gal Gadot led film has been accumulating all kinds of records since its run began back in June, and the film has recently crossed the impressive $800 million mark at the international box office. As a result, the movie now ranks as the 64th highest grossing film ever.

But it’s in the U.S. that its latest record has come, with Wonder Woman now eclipsing 2002’s Spider-Man as the highest grossing superhero origin film at the domestic box office.

According to Box Office Mojo, Wonder Woman has accumulated $404 million which puts it just ahead of Spider-Man’s $403 million.

Spider-Man still holds the record for the highest earning superhero origin film worldwide with a total of $821 million. However, as Wonder Woman has yet to be released in Japan, it is not far-fetched to imagine it taking that record as well.

Wonder Woman releases in Japan on August 25th.

Before she was Wonder Woman, she was Diana, princess of the Amazons, trained to be an unconquerable warrior. Raised on a sheltered island paradise, when an American pilot crashes on their shores and tells of a massive conflict raging in the outside world, Diana leaves her home, convinced she can stop the threat. Fighting alongside man in a war to end all wars, Diana will discover her full powers…and her true destiny.

Wonder Woman sees Patty Jenkins (Monster) directing a cast that includes Gal Gadot (Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Connie Nielsen (Gladiator), Robin Wright (House of Cards), Danny Huston (X-Men Origins: Wolverine), David Thewlis (The Theory of Everything), Ewen Bremner (Snowpiercer), Said Taghmaoui (American Hustle), Elena Anaya (The Skin I Live In), Lisa Loven Kongsli (Force Majeure), Lucy Davis (Shaun of the Dead) and Ann Wolf.
