X-Men: Apocalypse to be set in the 1980s

June 16, 2014 by admin

It was announced well before the release of X-Men: Days of Future Past, but we now know a little bit more about the upcoming X-Men: Apocalypse.

Speaking with The Q and A Podcast, X-Men: Days of Future Past writer Simon Kinburg talked about a number of topics and dropped the setting for X-Men: Apocalypse. “[The] next movie takes place in 1983,” Kinberg announced.

That sets the movie ten years after X-Men: Days of Future Past. We already knew that the movie would be centred on the First Class cast with the original cast too and that it would be a Roland Emmerich style disaster movie.

Kinberg also talked about the controversy of sending Wolverine back instead of Kitty Pryde, “part of the problem was casting Ellen Page in [X-Men: The Last Stand] who is, you know, a 25 year old actress so she would have been negative 25 in 1973,” he said.  “I toyed with other characters like Bishop and Cable because I like the idea of casting new actors for their older versions in the future and younger versions in the 70s. And then it hit me in the head, like I was hit with the obvious stick, that ‘you have an actor who is the same age in the 70s as he is in the future who happens to be the biggest character in pop culture for these movies – so maybe you should take advantage of that. And so I did.”

“And not only was there the commercial side of it – because it’s Hugh Jackman and Wolverine – but there is the more interesting side of training your mentor the lessons he would teach you.”

He also touched on Kitty Pryde’s non-explained power to send people back in time, “there was a line that was cut where Wolverine said, ‘I guess you’re taking people throgh more than walls huh kid?'” When asked why it was cut, Kinberg replied, “I don’t know. It’s a long and complicated movie”.

X-Men: Days of Future Past sees X-Men veterans Hugh Jackman (Wolverine), Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique), James McAvoy (Professor X), Michael Fassbender (Magneto), Nicholas Hoult (Beast), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Lucas Till (Havok), Halle Berry (Storm), Anna Paquin (Rogue), Ellen Page (Kitty Pryde), Shawn Ashmore (Iceman) and Daniel Cudmore (Colossus) joined in the cast by franchise newcomers Evan Peters (American Horror Story) as Quicksilver, Booboo Stewart (The Twilight Saga: Eclipse) as Warpath, Omar Sy (The Intouchables) as Bishop, Fan Bingbing (Iron Man 3) as Blink, Adan Canto (The Following) as Sunspot, Evan Jonigkeit (The Following) as Toad, Josh Helman (Mad Max: Fury Road) as William Stryker and Peter Dinklage (Game of Thrones) as Bolivar Trask.
