Xolo Maridueña says there’s room for more Blue Beetle in James Gunn’s DC Universe

June 6, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Blue Beetle is finally making his way to the big screen, and no one is more excited than the titular hero himself, Xolo Maridueña. During a recent conversation with Empire, the Cobra Kai star spoke about his future in DC and how he feels the team is ready to do more.

“If we get one movie or a trilogy and fucking fold this into the Justice League shit, we’re ready for the whole nine,” the actor tells Empire. “For me and Angel [Manuel Soto, director] and the team, we kicked ass with this movie. It just depends on numbers.”

He also spoke about how vital the role is for a young Latino like him, as he marks the first Latino lead for a DC movie. “The goal was to create a movie for a young me and a young Angel that said, ‘Hey, man, someone who looks like you or comes from a similar background can be a superhero.'”

“The second thing was to open more doors for people like us. As fun as it is to get into this superhero world where everything is [dialed up to] 110 percent, [it’s] the characters… that I’ve [most] related to,” he adds.

The future of DC Studios and who will return is still in the air. While James Gunn announced his soft reboot slate, including Superman: Legacy and some reported films from Andy Muschietti and James Mangold, there’s still room for some previous DCEU-focused characters to return.

We’ve previously reported The Flash 2 has a completed script with all those returning players, and Gunn has not shut the door on Aquaman’s future, so Blue Beetle can easily fit into some place in the DC Universe.

We’ll see how Blue Beetle does with audiences and critics when the film is released this August.

Recent college grad Jaime Reyes returns home full of aspirations for his future, only to find that home is not quite as he left it. As he searches to find his purpose in the world, fate intervenes when Jaime unexpectedly finds himself in possession of an ancient relic of alien biotechnology: the Scarab. When the Scarab suddenly chooses Jaime to be its symbiotic host, he is bestowed with an incredible suit of armor capable of extraordinary and unpredictable powers, forever changing his destiny as he becomes the Super Hero BLUE BEETLE.

Featuring in the cast of Blue Beetle are Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai), Adriana Barraza (Rambo: Last Blood) Damían Alcázar (Narcos: Mexico), Elpidia Carrillo (Mayans M.C.), Bruna Marquezine (God Save the King), Raoul Max Trujillo (Sicario), Susan Sarandon (Dead Man Walking), George Lopez (Rio), Belissa Escobedo (Hocus Pocus 2) and Harvey Guillén (What We Do in the Shadows).

Blue Beetle is set for release on August 18th 2023.
