Yellowjackets’ Karyn Kusama “so excited” for season 3 plot

August 6, 2023 by Ricky Church

It has been a few months since Yellowjackets concluded its second season and now we have our first tease of what might come for the third season as the series’ past timeline will explore the Yellowjacket’s re-entry into the world after their 18 months of surviving in the wilderness.

Yellowjackets follows a girl’s high school soccer team who get trapped in the woods after their plane crashed, eventually forcing them into cult-like factions and descending into cannibalism to survive. The series has followed two timelines, one of the team immediately after their crash and how they survived and the other of a select group of survivors as adults 25 years after they were rescued. The present timeline explores how their trauma has shaped them along with the threat of their secrets being exposed while the past timeline details the mystery of what exactly they did and who – or what – was in charge.

Yellowjackets executive producer Karyn Kusama, who has also directed episodes of the series including its pilot and second season finale, revealed on Variety’s Awards Circuit podcast that the past timeline will jump forward a bit by picking up from a brief tease in the second season as the Yellowjacket survivors re-enter society after their year-and-a-half in the woods and how they adjust back to civilization after all the trauma they endured.

“I’ve been so excited by this,” Kusama said on the podcast. “The concept of that immediate aftermath of re-entry into the world, to me, there’s a whole season worth of material there. And the fact that this is such a long game that each of these characters is facing, in terms of reorienting themselves to whatever normalcy is supposed to be. I’m sure we’re going to learn that their normal is a lot different than our normal… There’s a lot that needs to be figured out between Season 2 and Season 3.”

It is unknown when Yellowjackets season three will begin pre-production as development has been on pause ever since the WGA began their strike for better wages and safety against AI from the studios. Now that SAG-AFTRA has also begun striking alongside the writers a couple weeks ago, it may be a while before Yellowjackets returns to the screen.

Two months have passed since Shauna gave Jackie the cold shoulder— to disastrous results. In the face of their deepening hunger and fear, the tension among our Yellowjackets has only grown worse. The harsh conditions of winter are intensifying by the day, and the psyches of our survivors are deteriorating just as fast. Threatened by the darkness of the wilderness — and the haunting memories of it in the present — our former state champs will be forced to make impossible decisions. As they confront the horrible truth of what survival entails, the real nightmare for each of them will be to figure out who they are — and what they are willing to sacrifice in order to stay alive.

Yellowjackets stars Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, Juliette Lewis, Tawny Cypress, Sophie Nélisse, Samantha Hanratty, Sophie Thatcher, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Courtney Eaton, Liv Hewson, Steven Krueger, Warren Kole and Kevin Alves. New additions include Elijah Wood (The Lord of the Rings), Lauren Ambrose (Servant), Simone Kessell (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Jason Ritter (Raising Dion), Nicole Maines (Supergirl), Nia Sondaya (Truth Be Told) and François Arnaud (The Borgias).
