Zack Snyder considered the mullet for Superman in Justice League

March 23, 2021 by Amie Cranswick

While Henry Cavill’s Superman got to don his fan favourite black suit in Zack Snyder’s Justice League, the filmmaker stopped short of delivering a truly comic book accurate version of the Man of Steel from the classic Death and Return of Superman arc by keeping his traditional hairstyle as opposed to having him rock a glorious 90s mullet.

Speaking to YouTuber Tyrone Magnus, Snyder has confirmed that he did briefly consider giving Superman a mullet, but was facing enough pushback from Warner Bros. at the time who were already making him shoot Cavill’s scenes with the coloured Superman costume, something he later adjusted in post.

“We actually talked about it a lot, and I was a slight advocate – a little bit, for the mullet – but I think that there was no way to go back from that and at the time the studio was really leaning on me pretty hard,” explained Snyder. “I was lucky to be able to figure it out, so I could get the black suit…I had done a lot of research before, so we knew how to turn the color suit black. I always said I’d shoot the colored suit, but it’s a mistake. I’m just saying it out loud to you guys, this is bullshit. And so they were like, ‘You don’t know what you are talking about, nobody wants a black suit, let’s just do the colors.’ And so, you know, I thought, ‘Look, in post, you guys are going to change your minds.’ But, here we are with the black suit.”

Given that Warner Bros. and Joss Whedon already faced the Herculean task of digitally removing Cavill’s Mission: Impossible moustache from reshot footage, one can only imagine how dreadful Superman’s scenes in the theatrical cut would have looked if they’d also had to digitally crop out a mullet from Snyder’s original footage.

In ZACK SNYDER’S JUSTICE LEAGUE, determined to ensure Superman’s (Henry Cavill) ultimate sacrifice was not in vain, Bruce Wayne (Ben Affleck) aligns forces with Diana Prince (Gal Gadot) with plans to recruit a team of metahumans to protect the world from an approaching threat of catastrophic proportions. The task proves more difficult than Bruce imagined, as each of the recruits must face the demons of their own pasts to transcend that which has held them back, allowing them to come together, finally forming an unprecedented league of heroes. Now united, Batman (Affleck), Wonder Woman (Gadot), Aquaman (Jason Momoa), Cyborg (Ray Fisher), and The Flash (Ezra Miller) may be too late to save the planet from Steppenwolf, DeSaad, and Darkseid, and their dreadful intentions.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League is directed by Zack Snyder and features Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Ray Fisher as Cyborg, Jason Momoa as Aquaman, Ezra Miller as The Flash, Amy Adams as Lois Lane, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, Robin Wright as General Antiope, J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, Amber Heard as Mera, Joe Morton as Silas Stone, Willem Dafoe as Vulko, Ciaran Hinds as Steppenwolf, Joe Manganiello as Deathstroke, Harry Lennix as Martian Manhunter, Kiersey Clemons as Iris West, Zheng Kai as Ryan Choi, Peter Guinness as DeSaad, Ray Porter as Darkseid, and Jared Leto as The Joker.
